Book & show - Stefan Serneels
For the release of their very first cd ConSouling Sounds worked together with Stefan Serneels, which resulted in the beautiful release of Nadja’s “The Bungled & The Botched” (2008 – 500 copies – sold out). After this amazing cooperation de console wanted to do more with Serneels’s work, because his oeuvre is a true example of a crossover practice.
Serneels is not simply a painter, let alone a typical visual artist. He mixes images, genres, materials and techniques and drew quite a unique style from all of this, a signature style testifying of craftsmanship. His passion for music and films is equal to the love for his own medium, which by consequence is heavily influence by these other fields of expertise. Moreover, Serneels’s work does not merely consist of paintings, drawings, sculptures and audiovisuals, but also of very individual types of art such as books (bought or self-made) filled with drawings, or pencil drawings on sheets of paper glued together to form long panoramic pictures.
De console and Stefan Serneels now worked together to develop the reproduction of a one of these long drawings, to make the work accessible through the form of a “Leporellobook”. This type of book, a harmonicalike folded sizeable piece of paper, makes all of the drawing’s separate parts more readable for its “readers”. At the same time it divides up the drawing in quasi separate pieces, consistent with Serneels’ fragmentary way of building an image in general.
For this edition Sven Vanderstichelen wrote a text based on several in-depth interviews with the artist.
To the occasion of the publication we organize an exhibition in the former shop of Chris Janssens in Brussels.
